« What Is Perfect Credit   Identity Thieves Use Phishing to Steal From You »

by Harvey Warmuth

Crimes related to identity theft have been called the fastest growing crimes in America. This class of crimes ranges from simple purse-snatching to elaborately devised schemes run by large criminal organizations. The crimes themselves range from burglary to mail theft to Internet website cloning.

Just as identity theft as a crime has been increasing, a whole industry has developed around offering identity theft protection solutions. There is an incredible need for such services as it has been estimated that identity theft affects one in four US households.

In some instances your identity is stolen as a crime of opportunity as your information just happens to be in the wrong place at the right time, giving a thief the change to gain financially by using your information. But mostly identity theft is perpetrated through an elaborately thought out attempt to assume other people’s identity.

Assuming another person’s identity through the use of personal information that includes a social security number, birth date and name, is how identity theft can be defined. And the majority of identity theft crimes are committed so that criminals can make money off other people’s identities.

Identity theft literally steals their victims identity. The criminal becomes the victim and impersonates them so that financial institutions have no idea that they are really dealing with a criminal and not the actual person. It is a very personal crime that can put the victim’s finances in a ruin.

Identity theft is not always used for financial gain. It can also be used to help illegal immigrants gain favor in the eyes of employers and government agencies. With the crackdown on illegal immigration so strong, people in this country illegally are taking desperate measures to stay employed and in the country and are doing so by assuming legal citizens identities.

You really need to be doing what you can to not fall victim to this crime. Victims find themselves faced with a very daunting task as they try to clear their good name. Take every necessary precaution to ensure that you do not fall victim to this crime.

With the economy in the shape that it is in, we are seeing identity theft crimes continue to increase at an alarming rate. As more people become desperate to survive, you need to ensure that your identity remains safe.
