« A Few Credit Restoration Steps To Improve Credit Rating   Buyer Beware of Unsolicited Calls from Phony Debt Collector »

One of the disadvantages of the electronic world is that personal data is no longer safe. Everyone needs to take steps toward personal data protection. It is not uncommon to hear of breaches in security that allows your personal data to be seen by other people that have no business knowing the data.

Even military records have had breaches of security that have allowed your personal data to fall into the hands of the wrong person. Banks, insurance companies and hospitals have all fallen prey to security breaches that allow your personal data to get into the hands of the wrong person.

Why is it so important that our personal data be protected? Identity theft is running rampant. Thousands of persons are having their identity stolen every month. Identity thieves can take your identity and open credit card accounts without your ever knowing what has happened. Suddenly, you start getting calls from bill collectors about an overdue account that you never opened.

There are some things that you can do to protect your personal data, both on line and at home.

Never give out your social security number except for employment, banking and tax purposes. No one other than the government, a financial institution or an employer should have access to this number. If a doctor’s office or another company asks for your social security number, ask them why it is needed and if another form of identification can be used. In addition, if you are still carrying a social security card in your wallet, stop. Social security numbers should be kept in a safe place and not carried on your person. If a wallet is lost or stolen, this can help to keep your personal information safe.

If you have phone numbers or driver’s license numbers printed on your personal checks, order new checks without this information printed on it. It is safer to have to give this information each time that you write a check than it is to have it imprinted on your personalized checks. This will make it more difficult for someone to write check on your account.

For you own security, buy a paper shredder and use it regularly. Any pre-approved offers you do not plan to use should be shredded. In addition expired credit cards and even the labels from prescriptions should be ran through the shredder.

Consider buying a locking mailbox. You will find many models available that allow your mail to be delivered in a safe and secure manner. You can use your key to retrieve your mail and protect your identity from mail thieves. Mail thieves target mailboxes to find personal information about you. If your box is overflowing with mail, it is an easy target.

When you go out of town, ask someone to collect your mail regularly. If there is no one to collect the mail, ask the post office to hold it for you. If you are unable to pick up your mail on a regular basis, consider renting a post office box where your mail will be securely locked away until you are able to pick it up. This will help to ensure that your mail is safe.
