« The Follow-up Procedure Of An Identity Theft Complaint   Easy Ways to Protect Yourself from Identity Theft »

The sudden surge of online businesses has caused several incidences of identity theft. The Internet is a very huge community where almost everyone participates by providing personal and financial information to get items and services. Online transactions are more convenient than the traditional way of buying or selling merchandise. It saves time and effort. However, it also increases the risk for identity theft.

Identity theft occurs when someone wrongfully uses another person’s information to take on that person’s identity and gain something out of it. It is also referred to as identity fraud. One has to know that taking on another person’s identity is a crime; it is more than the simple misuse of social security or any other personal data.

Identity thieves obtain credit cards from banks and retailers, steal money from the victim’s existing accounts, apply for loans, establish accounts with utility companies, rent an apartment, file bankruptcy or obtain a job using the victim’s name. All of these happen without the victim’s knowledge.

Fraudulent people only need to access your social security number, date of birth or other identifying information such as your address and phone number and whatever else they can find out about you. They can use this information and come up with fake documents and identification like driver’s license. Once they have this, they can walk in a bank and get a loan, or shop for items “as you.”

Thieves can splurge on branded items and go on vacations with your money right under your nose! You’ll only get to discover the crime once you receive your credit card bill, and it maybe too late to do anything about it.

So caution is necessary especially in your financial activities. Be careful in giving out personal information. Make sure that the person who has access your info is credible. Impersonators are smart people. They are resourceful and determined. There are lots of places where they can access your information: your doctor, dentist, lawyer, accountant, school, insurance provider, and other places that require you to provide identity.

The Internet is also a vulnerable place. Skilled people can go online and hack your accounts to obtain your information. So be very careful. However, it is also a place where you can find tips and advice on how to avoid identity theft.
